silo art covers were first designed in 2004 to protect fine art from the irreversible effects of the harsh New Mexico sun. The indoor covers are constructed from a fused multi-layered polypropylene and microporous film fabric that is then lined with a unique light blocking soft structure Tyvek, commonly used as a safe archival solution for wrapping delicate artworks. The covers have a neutral Ph and a UPF above seventy-five that blocks one hundred percent of UVA / UVB / UVC radiation and most importantly visible light. They are water and wind resistant, yet breathable. Each cover is feather light and custom designed for a fit that minimally touches the art object while ensuring complete coverage.
silo art covers offer museum quality protection from both ultraviolet radiation and visible light. UV glazes for art framing and architectural fenestration do not protect fine art from visible light, including halogen and fluorescent light, which causes half to nine tenths of color fading in artworks. A very sensitive artwork, such as a colour photograph or a felt tip pen drawing, left uncovered in an office or home environment would fade noticeably in two years.
silo art covers are effective in any temporary or long term situation in which exposed artworks are not being viewed. Even part time usage of Silo Art Covers will reduce damage by lowering light and UV exposure in accordance with museum conservation standards. The indoor covers are appropriate for all art media and furniture.
Since 2009 silo art covers has also provided custom covers for outdoor sculptures. The outdoor covers are designed in tandem with internationally recognized art conservators to protect works from sea salt, rain, freeze, wind, and sunlight thus assuring the longevity of the artworks and minimizing the necessity for costly re-patination, waxing, and conservation services. The outdoor covers are high UV, non-abrasive, mildew resistant, breathable, and water repellent.

For two dimensional indoor works we request dimensions to the nearest 1/8th inch in order of height, width and depth. For outdoor works we typically require a photograph along with rough dimensions to begin the estimate process. Silo is available for site visits and consultations. We also provide readings of light, UV, humidity and temperature with the Elsec 764 Environmental Monitor to advise on specific preservation measures.
